Life is all about ups and downs. On this rollercoaster of a ride, it can sometimes become quite difficult to stay positive and often, we lose sight of the bigger picture.
Different people deal with this in different ways. Some put up a few motivation words and phrases up on their walls, while some read self-help or motivation books. Others find consolation in motivational quotes on life, and so on. There isn’t one sure-shot solution to tackle lack of motivation.
However, there are steps that you can take, to make sure you get the motivation you need and stay motivated in the long run, to achieve your goals.
1. Know your goal
Always keep the bigger picture in mind. There will be obstacles on the way – some big, some small. So, what can you do to stay focussed on the ultimate goal? Separate it from your day-to-day chores. Make some special time out in a day to think about this goal and what you’ve done so far and will do, in the future, to achieve it.
2. Take small steps
Break down your goal into smaller, attainable mini-goals. This way you won’t feel overwhelmed and pressured. Take for example, a match of cricket. The players don’t reach a 200 or 300 score in one go. It happens slowly, over the gradual period of the game, after overcoming certain obstacles that could potentially hinder the team’s success. Draw this parallel to your own life and see the results.
3. Don’t be afraid to seek out help
It is not a healthy thing to keep things bottled up inside. When you feel de-motivated or upset about something, it is always better to confide in someone. This someone could be a friend, a family member or even a professional. With this, not only do you get an outsider’s perspective on things but also the guidance you need to feel motivated to take action. You can also seek help online by reading some motivation blogs or motivation books.
4. Put up inspirational posters
Put up posters with motivation words or motivational quotes on life and success written on them. While this may seem clichéd, there is some logic behind it. Surrounding yourself with positivity and constantly seeing inspirational words while working can help increase your motivation and keep away any negative thoughts.
5. Surround yourself with positive people
Make it a point to stay in contact with people who bring out the best in you. People who are negative or malicious can have a negative impact on you and often leave you bitter and depressed. Cut these people out of your life and keep those who inspire you to accomplish your goals.
Bad or toxic habits often come in the way of success. These habits could include sleeping late, waking up late, not being punctual, drinking too much caffeine, smoking or drinking too much alcohol, among many others. All these habits can have a negative impact on your physical as well as mental health. They might not seem as obvious or significant factors but they contribute to the lack of productivity, more than you would think.
A motivation approach that is sure to help you stay positive and active in achieving your goal is meditating. While motivation words or motivation books are great, they are nothing compared to the power of meditation. It helps you get rid of any negative thoughts or distractions standing in the way of you and your ultimate goal. Just set aside thirty minutes a day to close your eyes, breathe in and out, and clear your foggy mind.
8. Face facts
When you want to accomplish something, laziness and excuses are always going to hold you back. It’s time to face facts and call yourself out for things that are affecting you adversely. You can also appoint someone to give you a reality check once in a while. It’s time to snap out of denial and making silly excuses. If you want results, then taking affirmative action is the only way. Laziness and procrastination are your worst enemies.
9. Reward yourself
Another effective motivation approach that might come handy is to reward yourself for a job well done. If you’ve stuck by your plan, taken a small step to achieve your immediate goal and managed to be successful, a little incentive should be underway. These small rewards will give you the motivation you need to stay focussed and charged up for the future.
10. Revere your role model
We all have role models who we admire and wish to be like someday. Put up a picture of your role model, watch their interviews, listen to their music, listen to what they have to say and understand their formula for success. Constantly having your inspiration around you will help you stay motivated and work twice as hard to accomplish your goals.
