“Clarity comes from engagement not from thinking”- Marie Forleo
Hi and welcome back to Action-Ables. In this episode, we’re discussing what’s one of the biggest mistake you can make while pursuing your goals.
See if this scenario sounds familiar to you. Suddenly, you have a thought in your mind and there’s a faint excitement in your heart. You’ve just thought about doing something exciting which lights up your heart. You’ve just thought about pursuing a goal.
In these couple of seconds, you may feel a flutter in your body and may even have a big broad smile on your face. This thoughts lasts for exactly less than 5 seconds. And then, something happens!
Your rational mind takes over. From this point on, it’s literally downhill. Seconds back you had this thought of pursuing a goal. You were just beginning to think of how it would feel to achieve that goal. Now, instead you find yourself thinking of all the possible things that can go wrong. Absolute worse scenarios such as being hurt, embarrassed or in other words a complete disaster!
When you have a thought of doing something and instead of plunging into action if you stop to think. This right here, is the biggest mistake one can make when it comes to pursuing their goals.
Thinking about your goals isn’t a mistake by itself. By all means think about what you want to do. However, once you’ve decided to pursue a meaningful goal for yourself, stop thinking about the goal, instead start taking action toward it.
If you don’t avoid making this mistake, you expose yourself to fear. And once fear takes over, it’s so much more difficult to take action.
What can you do to avoid making this mistake?
When you get an exciting thought, step 1 is learn to think of how you can do something to engage with this thought. For example, if you’re thinking of making a career shift, probably get an internship in the desired field of interest.
If you’re thinking of starting a business, prepare a business plan instead of thinking of the reasons why you won’t be able to start your business.
If you want to improve your relationship with your partner, friend or a family member, invest in spending time with them and think of possible conversations you want to have instead of thinking about how strained your relationship currently is at the moment.
Remember, thinking of a goal is quite powerful if you learn to immediately engage with your thoughts rather than allowing fear to creep up and overwhelm you.
As the quote goes “It’ll always seem impossible till its done”- Nelson Mandela
Choose to engage with your thoughts and take the necessary steps toward what you want.
So, here’s an exercise to stop overthinking and instead engage with your goals
Write down one exciting thing you’d like to do in the next one week.
Think about one thing you can physically do to engage with your goal
Do that thing immediately within 5 seconds.. This is in line with Mel Robbin’s 5 Seconds which basically states that you have 5 minutes before you win your mind or your mind wins over you.
This like all other improvement techniques are not a one-time exercise. Instead it’ll take time to implement this in your life. The only question is whether you’re willing to think about doing this and engaging and going ahead and doing what’s necessary.
