Episode #4

Getting things done when you don’t feel like doing them

Have you found yourself wondering how to get things done in life?

Sure, we do have information available on our fingertips. However, today I want to speak to you about Getting things done when you don’t feel like doing them.

Without exception, every single person knows deep down what they want for themselves. We may even know how to go about them. And yet, what’s ironic is that despite knowing what we truly want, we struggle to take action for those very same things.

Now think about it for a second. And let’s take an example: Say you want to get healthy but you don’t feel like eating healthy and exercising. You may undoubtedly want to be healthy. You think about it a lot, you say you really want to. However, when it comes to eating right and exercising you’re unable to.

This is a very common phenomenon. We all have goals and want to achieve things, the only difference is the action that we take.

This begs the question, how do we take action, if we don’t feel like?

From my own experience, to get things things done I have learnt two simple effective hacks.

1. Setting an Intention

You won’t believe how underrated this is. To get things done, you have to want to get them done on purpose. Even a small starting intent will suffice.

For example: next time you’re going to have a conversation with someone don’t have that conversation, unless and until you’ve set an intention for the outcome. What do you hope to achieve from that conversation. See, when you set an intention, you tell yourself that you’re in control you want to get this done and it’ll help you with the next hack.

2. Understand that my feelings have nothing to do with the task at hand.

When I have to take action, and I don’t feel like doing it (And I’m being honest, there are many times where I don’t feel like) I have learnt to recognise that there’s only a 30sec window before I get up and take the action or my mind takes over. And then it’s just circus and a whole waste of time, because my mind starts giving me all the reasons and just adds to my hesitation making it all the more difficult for me to take required action.

So, here’s what I have learnt to say to myself, I’ve set an intention for myself and my life. That I get to decide what I want to Create, Be and Do in my life so my mind is under my control rather than it controlling me. I know what I need to do, I may not feel like doing those things but I’ve decided to do them and I will. There’s no discussing this.

I decided to do those things (no one else, it was me), and I need to get them done (no one else will) It’s as simple as that. Now, of course I understand some of you may think this sounds too simple and really what’s the big deal about this.

I’m a firm believer that If you don’t try you’ll never know. And not knowing is worse than trying and failing even. So what do you have to loose. There you have it that’s the topic for today.

Now, let’s move on to that one thing that you can do to get things done for yourself when you don’t feel like.

Starting today, everyday write down an intention for yourself. I write an intent for myself everyday for the last several years and I can honestly share the difference between when I wasn’t doing this and when I started to.

Try it for yourself. Set sometime 1 week/ month where everyday on purpose you write an intent. It won’t be easy if you a miss a day start over. This one thing can make a remarkable difference to your life.
