One of my favourite quotes from Tony Robbins is “Change happens when the pain of staying the same is greater than the pain of change.”
I’ve often heard this sentence in some form of the other “I want to change my habits or my negative beliefs but it’s so damn difficult” “I mean I’m certain I can change if it were easy.”
Hi and welcome to Action-Ables. In this episode we’re discussing how long it takes to make a change.
We’re almost halfway through January, how are those New Year resolutions coming along?, if you made any. If you’re on track, great going. If you’ve slipped and staying on track is looking difficult, then you may want to stick around for this.
Think about it, if there’s something you want to do but you haven’t done it already, why is that?
Think about the reasons. It can hardly be because you don’t know how to do it, because come on we live in the 21st century! And we all have a best friend called Google! So what else is holding you back?
When it comes to doing something, there are two important aspects to consider. One is ‘how’ to do something and the other is ‘why’ you want to do it. While Google can help you with the former. The latter is something you have to manage on your own.
This is where the challenge lies. You inherently know that in order for you to achieve something you’ll need to do certain things. Intellectually you understand that when you do these certain things in a systematic manner over a period of time you’re able to get the results you want.
The trouble, however, lies in doing these things, in other words taking action. Because the fact is it’s both physically and mentally exhausting to make changes in life.
So, here’s a slightly different way of looking at change that you may not have considered, at least no seriously. Think about this “How long does it take for you to make a change?”
With any goal that you’d like to achieve, have you considered how long it’ll take you before you feel like you’ve got things under your control?
Almost everyone thinks about how hard it’ll be to make changes yet seldom do people stop and consider how long before the required change happens.
The Answer: Change happens in an instant and not in how long it takes to get the results.
Let’s take an example: say, you want to finally change your career and do something that you love. You thought about doing this for years but now you actually go ahead and start that business you’ve always wanted. And it takes you 2-3 years to start seeing profits and you feel extremely happy with what you’re doing. How long would you say it took you to change?
If you said 2-3 years you’d be wrong. The answer is you changed the instant you decided to go after what you really wanted. Everything from that point on supported you in taking the required actions.
There’s of course a huge disclaimer to this: such a change can’t be confused with saying ‘oh I’m going to do XYZ’ and then chill in front of Netflix for several hours and not doing what it necessary.
The type of Change that happens in an instant, is the kind where you don’t even need to tell someone else about it. It’s where you’ll feel a strong, silent resilience that this is the moment you’ll look back to in a month, a year or even 10 years later and you’ll know that this was when you changed for yourself and for the better!
So how does one go about making such a change?
Do this exercise:
Think about what you want to achieve- your goal
Instead of thinking about how hard it’ll be difficult to take action toward your goal, ask yourself ‘could this be the moment you change?
Do step no. 2 enough number of times and one of two things will happen, you’ll definitely start taking the required actions or you’ll certainly reevaluate what you’re tying to achieve.
