Welcome to Action-Ables. In this episode, let’s find out if you’re making progress toward your goals and if not how you can start to do that.
It’s a fact of life that every single change you want to make will be difficult. With this intellectual wisdom in mind, let’s take a look at what progress looks like.
It’s similar to the the performance review you have at the end of a quarter or year with your manager at work. He/she hopefully gives you a review which indicates how you’re doing at work and is obviously critical to your career.
With your personal goals, unless you create a way to review your progress you may doubt your efforts, especially when you don’t see obvious results.
Now, you would think this is logical and everyone who’s got a goal they would take the time to set up a way to track their progress, right? Well, unfortunately that isn’t the case. How do I know this?
While coaching my clients, I’ve noticed that once an individual crosses the first obstacle of getting started toward their goals, soon they encounter their second major obstacle which is of staying consistent in their efforts.
The way you can overcome this obstacle, is if you set up a system to track your progress, it becomes less overwhelming and even helps build your confidence with what you’re trying to achieve.
There’s a golden rule for making progress. However, you’ll first need to start taking action. Depending on what you’re trying to achieve, you should aim to take a small baby step toward the realisation of that goal. So, the rule is To get started in anyway rather than thinking about getting started.
The main reason why someone may fail to set up this system to track their progress could be because they may feel accountable. That once they have a system to track their progress that would mean thy have to consistent action. This may sound counter intuitive, however, being held accountable for our actions can seem scary because then we know we won’t be allowed to make excuses!
So, how do you set up a way to track you progress? Here’s a technique you can use.
1. Write down the key things you need to do in order to move toward you goal
2. Create the time and habits to do these key things for a week without excuses.
3. Notice/observe if you’re doing the key things that are required to move toward your goal
4. At the end of the week, you’ll know where you stand.
If you didn’t do the key things, ask yourself why you weren’t able to do them. What do you need to do in order for it make it happen. And create a plan for another 7 days.
5. Repeat this for a month. At the end of 4 weeks of mindful practice you’ll start pursuing your goals in a different way.
